What is Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originated from the Han nationality in China and has a history of thousands of years. TCM is a holistic medicine, is an authentic general health practice and defined as “a comprehensive science that studies the laws of health and disease transformation in human life activities and their prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and health care based on the theory and practical experience of traditional Chinese medicine”. Compared with modern medicine, it is often classified as traditional medicine.

The development goal of traditional Chinese medicine in the world today is mostly to pursue its own scientific, modern application and development. TCM Practitioners go through the combined methods of observation, auscultation, inquiry, and palpation to find the cause, nature, and location of disease, and to analyze the pathogenesis and the changes of energy, blood and body fluids in the five internal organs, meridians, joints in the human body, and to diagnose the current conditions of the body and to differentiate syndromes, and then derive the name of the disease and summarize the syndrome type. Based on the principle of syndrome differentiation, treatment methods including acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine, massage, cupping, Gua sha, qigong, or diet therapy are formulated. Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine since it has a quick onset of effects and has been used for emergency treatment since ancient times.

Acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (TCMP) in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Newfoundland must be registered with a regulatory body and complete a registration exam. In Canada Acupuncturists need 2010 hours study including 540 hours clinical internship and to pass the registration exam. TCMPs need to complete 2010 hours acupuncture study and additional 1000 hours study of herbal medicine, and to pass the registration exam, the total clinical internship of TCMP requires 840 hours. Acupuncture not only effectively removes pain (such as migraine, stiff neck, frozen shoulder, lower back pain, sciatica, arthritis, knee pain, heel pain, etc.) but also relieves stress and anxiety, balances energy, treats digestive disorder, fatigue, insomnia, infertility and more conditions without herbal medicine. TCMPs are committed to provide you with the right approach from nutrition, lifestyle perspective, all natural remedies (moxibustion, cupping, Guasha/scraping, acupressure, acupuncture), and natural herbal medications. Clients need to know that your recovery is related with your constitution, your lifestyle changes, nutrition, restorative rest, even medical leave during the treatments. Some illnesses may require more frequent treatment for maintaining effectiveness and the time of full recovery on different illnesses vary widely. After the treatment, clients are required to rest and cultivate the body and mind, and follow the instructions from practitioners.
